PHILADELPHIA – Today Mayor Jim Kenney, Comcast Corporation Senior Executive Vice President David L. Cohen and City Representative Sheila Hess honored Philadelphia’s Olympians in a ceremony at City Hall.
Nia Ali Women’s, 100 Meter Hurdle; and Ajee Wilson, Women’s 800 Meters were among those recognized for their achievements in Rio.
“Philadelphia has a great history of success in the Olympics,” said Mayor Kenney, “We wanted to recognize these individuals for not only continuing that tradition, but also for showing the youth of this City that great things happen when you work hard and dedicate yourself towards achieving a goal.”
Nia Ali and Ajee Wilson, who were able to attend the ceremony, were presented with commemorative Liberty Bells as a sign of appreciation for their successes and exemplary representation of the City in Brazil.
“Philadelphia has a time-honored tradition of hometown sports heroes,” said City Representative Sheila Hess. “Through sheer grit, grace, and purpose, our local U.S. Olympians are true champions exemplifying the best of Philadelphia shining an international light on our great city. We are proud to call these ambassadors of hope and inspiration our own. They have reached a plateau of prominence, representing not only themselves, but an entire city that collectively admires them.”
The International Olympic Committee awarded NBCUniversal, which is owned by Philadelphia’s own Comcast Corporation, the broadcast rights in the USA for the Olympic Games through to 2032.
“Nothing quite matches the excitement of the Olympic Games, and it’s an honor to bring them to America,” said Cohen. “We are impressed by the dedication, passion and perseverance that these athletes embody and are so proud of how they represented our city and country in Rio.”
