(September 15, 2016) – The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) – a North Carolina-based organization that promotes safe walking and bicycling – has again designated Philadelphia as a Silver Level Walk Friendly Community.
The Silver Designation recognizes the City of Philadelphia’s commitment to creating and sustaining walkable, pedestrian-friendly environments. The PBIC recognized Philadelphia’s pedestrian wayfinding system, robust transit system, complete streets guidelines, and pedestrian and bicycle planning processes as key initiatives supporting a healthier Philadelphia.
“One of the best things about living in Philadelphia is all the great ways people can move through neighborhoods. The city’s dense urban core, and our beautiful trail networks, make it easy and fun for everyone to walk and bike every day,” said Clarena Tolson, Deputy Managing Director of Office of Transportation & Infrastructure Systems. “The Silver Walk Friendly Designation is great recognition for our continued hard work to promote safe, connected and convenient places to walk.”
This award follows on the City of Philadelphia’s first Walk Friendly Designation in 2010. Philadelphia is one of 58 municipalities designated as a Walk Friendly Community. The designations go to communities that have demonstrated a commitment to improving walkability and pedestrian safety through comprehensive programs, plans and policies.
The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center is a transportation data outlet maintained by the University of North Carolina’s Highway Safety Research Center, with funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration and FedEx. The Walk Friendly Communities Initiative is a national program aimed at cataloguing and encouraging best practices in promoting walking as transportation and recreation nationwide.
