TreePhilly Spring Yard Tree Giveaways

Need some shade?

Philadelphia residents can pick up a free tree to plant in their yard at one of TreePhilly’s Spring Yard Tree Giveaways.

This year’s city-wide locations include Parkway Central Library (April 4), Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Center (April 14), several bar/restaurants on “Arbrew Day” (April 20) and many more at neighborhood parks. Advance registration encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome at all events.

To learn more about yard trees and see the full giveaway schedule, visit TreePhilly’s website.

t’s a tree for all! Each spring and fall, our Yard Tree Giveaway program provides free trees for city dwellers to plant on private property. Trees provided through this program must be planted in the ground (a grassy area or lawn) on private property in Philadelphia, and may not be planted in a container or in the sidewalk.

Giveaway Events and Registration

Giveaway events are held at various locations across the city each spring and fall. Registration opens approximately one month prior to the events and allows participants to select their preferred pick-up event and species. Registration is strongly encouraged, but we generally accept walk-ins at the end of each event while supplies last. You can sign up for registration announcements here.
Yard Tree Information

We offer a variety of species each season, ranging from large shade trees to small fruit and flowering trees. Upon pick-up, trees will be in 5 gallon buckets and will be from 2-10’ tall. Trees will fit in a car/truck, grocery cart, or even on the bus! See information on how to get your tree home safely here.
Species Selection

When choosing a species, please consider the available space in your yard for roots and branches as well as how much sun your yard gets each day. Please also consider the difficulty of each species; some grow well with little maintenance, while others (particularly fruit trees) require expert pruning and care to thrive. See the list of available trees here.
Planting Location

For advice on where in your yard to plant your tree, check out Right Tree, Right Place from the Arbor Day Foundation. If your yard is paved or concreted and you have nowhere to plant a tree, please consider applying for the Philadelphia Water Department’s Rain Check program. This innovative cost-sharing program enables Philadelphia property owners to make affordable stormwater management improvements to their properties, including concrete removal and porous paver installation.
Planting & Care

We partner with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) to offer tree planting and care demonstrations at each giveaway event. We’ll also send you home with a free bag of mulch from the Fairmount Park Organic Recycling Center and educational materials that will help you properly plant and care for your tree. You can get a head start by checking out PHS’s great Tree Tenders Video Library here. For more information, please check out the planting and care information on our website, or download and print our detailed Yard Tree Planting and Care guide.
Free Planting & Delivery for People with Limited Mobility

TreePhilly provides free yard tree delivery and planting for Philadelphians with limited mobility. Please do not register online if you are interested in free delivery and planting assistance.
