(Philadelphia, November 28, 2016) – Residents interested in learning about the wide range of job opportunities with the City of Philadelphia are urged to attend the “Hire Me Phila.gov Career Fair” this Friday, December 2.
The Career Fair, sponsored by the Human Resources and Talent Unit in the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, will include representatives of nearly two dozen City departments who can speak about current opportunities, how to access job listings, and the hiring process. Employees will also be on hand to talk about their experiences working for the City.
“This isn’t just about landing a job – it is about finding a new and rewarding career,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. “And by meeting folks who work in these departments, participants will learn about how exciting a career in public service can be.”
Departments taking part include Police, Fire, Prisons, Free Library, Parks and Recreation, Licenses & Inspections, Water, Streets, the Airport, Health, the Office of Innovation and Technology, Revenue, Fleet Management, Public Property and the Law Department. Careers discussed will include educational, science-related, finance, legal, skilled trades, social work, engineering and public safety.
“Many people don’t even realize that the City is the second largest employer in Southeastern Pennsylvania,” said Jackie Linton, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Human Resources & Talent. “The Career Fair will be a great chance for residents to learn about the scope of job opportunities that the City offers.”
The Hire Me Phila.gov Career Fair will take place between 10am and 2pm on Friday, at the Winnet Student Life Building (Great Hall, second floor) at the Community College of Philadelphia, 17th and Spring Garden Streets. The event is free and open to the public but registration is required. Participants can register online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/city-government-career-fair-tickets-29255185046. Registration will also be available at the door.
The Career Fair also supports the workforce development initiatives of the Kenney Administration, led by Managing Director Michael DiBerardinis, aimed at making the City’s workforce more diverse and reflective of Philadelphia as a whole. That effort includes expanded recruitment efforts to fill entry level civil service jobs—so eventually those candidates can work their way up into managerial positions. It is also focused on expanding the pool of applicants for hard-to-fill positions, as well as maximizing the long-term career potential of seasonal workers.
“Unfortunately, many applicants for city employment only hear of civil service opportunities through ‘word of mouth’ or because they know somebody who is already a city employee and knows how the system works,” said DiBerardinis. “There’s certainly a need to better publicize these opportunities to a broader, more diverse audience — including minorities and returning citizens – and this Career Fair supports that goal.”
In fact, the Career Fair will include several tables for specific services and hard-to-fill jobs. These will include information on skill trades (electricians, plumbers, etc.), seasonal jobs, engineering jobs, community service, and opportunities for veterans.
