Advisory: City of Philadelphia to Announce First Cohort of Community Schools

WHEN: Monday, July 18, 2016, 10:00 AM

WHERE: City Hall, Mayor’s Reception Room, Philadelphia, PA 19107

WHO:

Mayor Jim Kenney
Council President Darrell L. Clarke
Otis Hackney, Chief Education Officer, Mayor’s Office of Education
Susan Gobreski, Director for Community Schools, Mayor’s Office of Education
Dr. William Hite, Jr., Superintendent, School District of Philadelphia
Marjorie Neff, Chair, School Reform Commission
George Jackson, Communications Director, Philadelphia Federation of Teachers
WHAT: The Mayor’s Office of Education and School District of Philadelphia will announce the first neighborhood schools selected for the City’s new community schools initiative.

Community schools are public schools where a full-time coordinator works with the entire school community – students, parents, teachers, administrators, service providers, and neighbors – to identify the most pressing needs, such as expanded medical services, after school programming, and/or job-training, and works with service providers and City agencies to bring these resources directly into the school. Community schools become neighborhood centers, improving access to programs and services for students, families and neighbors.

Over the next five years, the City will invest nearly $40 million to transform 25 existing public schools into community schools.
