City Announces Exciting Details for Philadelphia International Unity Cup Championship Game on Nov 5th
Philadelphia – With less than three weeks to go until the Championship Game for the Philadelphia International Unity Cup (PIUC), Philadelphia’s first city-wide, world-cup style soccer tournament, the City of Philadelphia made a series of announcements regarding upcoming events. Details released included the results of last weekend’s quarter-final games, details for this weekend’s semi-final games and what fans can expect the day of the Championship.
The quarter-final round games were played on Sunday, October 16th at LaSalle University; the winning teams advancing to the semi-final round games are Germany, Ivory Coast, Liberia and Ukraine. The semi-final round games will take place on Sunday, October 23rd at Temple University. Ukraine will play Ivory Coast first at 9:00am, followed by Germany against Liberia at 11:00am.
“I have been overwhelmed by the community response to the Unity Cup so far,” said Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell. “Going to games and seeing the fans cheering in the stands for their teams have really highlighted Philadelphia’s diversity for me. I am very excited to see the crowds turn out for the big game in November – the first time a soccer game has ever been played at Citizens Bank Park.”
Finally, the City is planning a day of family-friendly fun with distinct international flavor culminating in the Championship game on November 5th at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies, in South Philadelphia. The day’s agenda begins at noon with a “Gateway of Nations” and International tailgate full of global cuisine, vendors and performances in lot M outside the ballpark. The 1st base gate will open at 3:45pm for the in-stadium events: a youth soccer game, the parade of nations, a naturalization ceremony, and the championship game which will begin at 6:00pm.
The PIUC began in early September with 32 teams of Philadelphians – representing 32 countries around the world – participating in group play, followed by a knockout tournament leading to the final rounds. The city-wide tournament was conceived as an event that uses the universal language of sport to bring people together and showcase Philadelphia’s rich cultural diversity.
